Ray Bradbury wrote one story called The Veldt in which he critiques technology. Technology has been changing the society and the way it works, in this great story Bradbury mentions how parents have been replaced by this futuristic technology leading to greater problems. Ray does a great job making the reader really get into the story and feel the suspense and the tension including dialogues and similes.
The Veldt is set in a futuristic society in which it comes to a point that technology is really advanced. In this case the house do everything by its own, turning on the lights, cooking for the children and other things, also the nursery, this was a new technological room that could be bought in that society. The technology advancements were so huge that it started affecting society and each persons labor in it, people started caring less about completing the daily jobs. Is our society capable of allowing this to happen?
With the dialogues going along in the story Ray show the conflicts going on.
“George I wish you´d look at the nursery”
“What´s wrong with it?”
“I don´t know”
“Well, then”
“I just want you to look at it, is all, or call a psychologist in to look at it”
With this example Ray show us the worries the parents had about their children nursery. Including dialogues he help the reader understand the problems, worries and feel the tension.
The main theme of the story is that if we don´t start making a better use of technology, then in a future it will replace us. In this case the author included a different futuristic technology, a nursery, that was Wendy and Peters playing ground, this technology led their parents to be replaced by it. This new nursery was great, it could be managed by peoples mind, " The walls began to purr and receded into crystalline distance, it seem and presently an African veldt appeared, in three dimensions, on all sides, in color reproduced to the final pebble and bit of straw. The ceiling above them became a deep sky with a hot yellow sun" In this example Ray show the readers such element as a new innovating technology, how it functions and how it was. Could this possibly exist in a future?
Along the story we can find couple similes. With this narrative technique Bradbury help the reader get the image of certain elements in the story for example, "The nursery was silent. It was empty as a jungle glade at hot night noon...". With this quote the reader get an image of how this place looks like, how the nursery is, it help the reader really get into the scene and feel like a character in the story. Why don´t be part of the story?
In conclusion The Veldt is a science fiction story that occurs in a future society that has really advanced technology. Ray Bradbury uses similes and dialogues that allow the reader understand and really get into the story. It has as major theme how humans could possibly allow technology replace their roles. Are we going to allow technology replace our sons, our parents? Personally I really liked the story, the topic and the narrative styles make the story more interesting. I couldn´t believe how addiction to technology could lead a pair of children kill their own parents , how technology could develop a kids mind somehow in such negative way. People should start taking a moderated usage of technology in order to avoid it controlling our minds and replacing our roles.
